Today the Department of English Philology and the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation have held the Phonetic Contest ‘The Queen’s Pronunciation’.
The contestants are first-year and second-year students majoring in English Philology, Linguistics and English-German Translation. They have recited English poems, sung songs, dramatised scenes from different plays, acted out dialogues.
The students’ performance is the result of a thorough theoretical and practical coaching in correct pronunciation of English sounds and intonation. These are the main criteria as well as oratorical and artistic skills, that the evaluation committee has taken into account.
The opinion of both Departments is that such contests are necessary as they unite those who love the English language, broaden their minds, and urge them to show their skills and abilities. Such events are not only of educational and cultural value. They provide our students with opportunities to be engaged in some joint activities, to work in a team, to improve their communicative skills and, in the long run, their command of English.
