How to succeed in life

All people want to be successful. However, all of us have our own definition of success.

Nowadays it is very fashionable to be successful, or, at least look like a successful person. Different psychologists and advertisers offer people the best, in their opinion, way of how to succeed in life. But, to my mind, success is the notion, meaning of which is individual for every person. Consequently, for some people success is a big house which is full of children’s laugh, and for other is, for instance, international fame. In my opinion, we can say a lot about some person, judging from his or her understanding of success, as it reflects the most valuable things in his or her life.

But mostly the notion “success” is associated with career, and we come to the conclusion, that you are successful, when you do what you want and what you like, and receive money for it. Moreover, success in people’s mind is connected with wealth, therefore successful person can afford good dwelling, car, travelling, etc.

As for me, I agree that success is when you earn money for your favourite occupation. The thing I would like to add is that, to my mind, successful people are those, who bring something new and good to our world, those, who make it better.

So, my piece of advice to those, who want to succeed, is not to be selfish, not to focus on money, but to think what good you can do for the world, to dream and make your dreams come true.

How to be successful?

To achieve success in a particular activity is a goal of a majority of people all around the world. Everyone wants to find out this secret knowledge. However, there is no common formula for success to follow. Then, let’s try to figure out this winning formula building on the experience of famous people whose contribution is respected and appreciated.

Do you know such names as Steve Jobs, Bruce Lee, Oprah Winfrey, Albert Einstein, George Washington, Mark Twain? What unites these people? They are great, extremely talented personalities who managed to succeed in literature, sport, science, politics, etc. There are some famous statements which can inspire your efforts towards a greater determination not to give in on the way of future success.

Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. Once he said “Never, never, never give in!” And here is a quotation of Thomas Edison, known for inventing the light bulb: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work”. In addition, a professional basketball player Michael Jordan stated: “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”  These world-wide famous people claim that to reach the target one should stay the course to success and never lose heart. Everyone makes mistakes but these failures should not discourage you.

One more important secret of success is to learn, work, self-improve and gain necessary experience.  “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever”. These words of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the Indian independence movement, should become your motto. The spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism Dalai Lama supported this idea by saying: “The goal is not to be better than the other man, but your previous self”.  The first President of the United States George Washington said: “We should not look back unless it is to derive useful lessons from past errors, and for the purpose of profiting by dearly bought experience.” Oprah Winfrey, the host of the highest-rated TV program of its kind in history in her interview stated: “Whatever your goal, you can get there if you’re willing to work”. So, reach the conclusions and mind these useful advice.

It would be impossible to be successful unless you believed in what you do. This is a quotation by a great Russian author Leo Tolstoy “We lost because we told ourselves we lost”. Theodore Roosevelt claims that faith in yourself and confidence play a crucial role in the achievement of success: “Believe you can and you’re halfway there”.

One of the most important things one should remember is not to take to heart critics and subjective viewpoints of others. Eleanor Roosevelt said, "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people." That is how the world works. So, Mark Twain, the author of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, advised the following: “To succeed in life, you need two things: ignorance and confidence”.  Moreover, there is one more useful tip from Michael Jordan that runs as follows: “Don’t let them drag you down by rumors, just go with what you believe in”.

I hope these statements will inspire you to remain an individual and do great things on the way to success despite enemies, failures and limits. They are just illusions. Remember it! And when you become a successful person, “keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground”, as Theodore Roosevelt suggested.
